Contract and Hours: Temporary and full-time (10 PA's)

 

Job purpose

To provide high quality, effective and efficient Acute Medical services within the contract resources available to Western HSC Trust.

To provide efficient and effective Acute Medical services to meet the needs of the population.

 

Job role

To share in the collective responsibility for the provision of Acute Medical services to patients within the Western Trust area.

To provide leadership within the speciality team and to contribute to the development of excellence in clinical practice through research, audit and undergraduate and postgraduate training.

To provide senior decision making within the Acute Medical services.

This post is a full time position, 10 Programmed Activities, with additional PA’s available for training, education/ specialist activities (to be determined upon appointment).

Mentorship is available if required from colleagues within the team or regionally if not available locally. It would also be expected that experienced candidates would be willing to mentor junior colleagues.

 

Key Result Areas / Main Responsibilities:

  • The prime clinical responsibility is to be accountable for the care of acute medical patients in the acute medical unit (AMU), ambulatory care unit (ACU) and emergency department (ED), within a team setting. The post holder will have continuing clinical and managerial/ administrative responsibility for the care of patients under his/ her charge.
  • To contribute in the development of acute medical services across AMU and ED. To help in the expansion of Altnagelvin same day emergency care services in ACU.
  • To support the improvement of links with colleagues in ED, GP, ICU and other hospital specialties.
  • Have a leadership role among the clinical services represented within the Acute Medical Unit. This will entail working with the lead nurses and AHPs to develop assessment and management skill. This will include the development of protocols and care pathways.
  • The post holder will be expected to provide professional supervision and management of junior medical staff.
  • Promote and develop multidisciplinary teamwork in the speciality of Acute Medicine.
  • Conduct the administrative duties associated with the care of patients and the management of the service in a timely manner.
  • Whilst working as the on-call Consultant to be available to provide advice to other colleagues by telephone.
  • Participate in audit, clinical governance, appraisal and continuing professional development activities as agreed by the profession and the Trust
  • To work collaboratively with neighbouring Trusts in keeping with best clinical practice, regional strategy and Trust policy.
  • The post holder will be expected to participate in the development of educational programmes for medical and nursing staff within their area.
  • There may be exceptional circumstances, due to emergencies or essential patient care, where the post holder may be expected to undertake additional duties or duties outside normal rostered duties.
