Job Summary

This is a replacement post. Its role is to share in the collective responsibility for provision of services to patients within the Paediatric department. A subspecialty to complement the current team would be encouraged (Current specialties include Allergy, Respiratory, Diabetes, Adoption and Fostering, Neonatology and Neurodisability). The successful candidate would be supported in developing an appropriate specialty if further training was required.

The successful candidate will complete a team of six consultant Paediatricians in the Western Trust (Southern Sector). This consists of five hospital based consultants and one joint hospital/community post.

The Consultant team provide the full range of inpatient and outpatient Paediatric services within the Fermanagh & Omagh geographical areas. This will include a “one in six on-call” with prospective cover responsibility in the South West Acute Hospital Enniskillen. The post holder will participate in both general Paediatric and neonatal care.

Main reposnsibilities

  • The post holder will participate in provision of inpatient and outpatient Paediatric/neonatal medical services at the South West Acute Hospital and out-patient Paediatric medical services at Omagh Heath & Primary Care Complex (OH&PCC).
  • Participation in the acute “on-call” rota at SWAH with five other consultant Paediatricians.
  • Participation in the Consultant of the Week rota for Paediatrics and neonates in the SWAH. During this week, all other clinical responsibilities including clinics are cancelled.
  • Participation in and supervision of junior Paediatric medical staff.
  • Take a lead organisational role in a specialty complementary to current colleagues.
  • Provide advice to the Trust Chief Executive and Director of Surgery, Paediatrics & Women’s Health via the Clinical Director/Clinical Lead on aspects of Paediatric services.
  • Responsible to the Trust Medical Director for the maintenance of personal professional standards.
  • Set out a clear work plan for Resident medical staff and provide clinical supervision throughout their contract.
  • Participate in the teaching and development of undergraduate medical students and other post graduate clinical staff.
  • Participate in Trust medical staff and other relevant committees as required.
  • Agree an annual Job Plan and work programme with consultant colleagues and Clinical Director/Clinical Lead
  • The successful candidate will help in maintaining guidelines and systems for setting and monitoring standards of care, reviewing effectiveness of practice in light of available evidence.
  • The successful candidate will assist in the development and implementation of systems that measure the level of services providing “best practice “standards.
  • The successful candidate will participate in quality improvement / medical and clinical audit activities and action recommendations to improve the service. A yearly programme identifying priorities for audit will be agreed within the directorate.
  • The post holder will undertake administrative duties associated with patient care to ensure arrangements are in place to meet quality standards.
  • The post holder will work with Consultant colleagues, Clinical Manager, Senior Midwifery/Nursing staff and others in developing and updating protocols, guidelines and other initiatives to enhance services.
  • The appointee will participate in continuing Professional Development and professional appraisal
