Compensation package: Midwife/ Nurse dual registered £33,435 to £44,234 plus a market supplement of up to £15,000 pa (included in monthly pay), then on top of that the 25% gratuity (of base salary) and the unsocial hours and overtime above 37.5hrs/ week also payable (overtime is 1.5)
Job purpose
As a dual qualified and registered nurse and midwife provide quality care to patients, acting in their interests promoting health and contributing to the multi-disciplinary team and including midwifery to women in the Falkland Islands in the ante, intra, and post partum period.
Main accountabilities
- Acting as a registered nurse and midwife work within the relevant scope of practice to facilitate care using Falkland Islands Government and Health Service guidelines however post holder will be expected to practice safely and make judgements from a range of facts and evolving situations requiring analysis of data which may not have a specific policy available.
- Undertake direct patient care demonstrating competence, acting as a role model and ensuring any alteration in health is noted, care plans altered and deterioration recognised and acted upon in an appropriate and timely manner, including (but not exhaustively) taking part in/or being the lead in the cardiac arrest situation, giving care to patients in intensive care, providing care to people with mental health disorders, caring for patients of any age, sex, sexuality, religion, disability, race, background or place of origin, caring for a mother at any time in the ante, intra, and postnatal period contributing to the team approach of care.
- Promote health by providing education to the patients and families on a one to one basis or with group work on healthy and safe lifestyles. Promote safeguarding with close liaison with colleagues in the nursing and multidisciplinary team to ensure a clear pathway of care is made
- Liaise with the multidisciplinary teams and outside agencies about identified risks including consulting with overseas specialists or contributing to referral overseas in a planned, urgent or emergency situation
- Support patients, their families and the public equally with dignity and respect recognising diversity and demonstrating equality of opportunity with a rehabilitative approach or supporting a peaceful death. Giving care to patients in intensive care, providing care to people with mental health disorders, caring for patients of any age background or place of origin from newborn to older age.
- Provide care to patients throughout their care pathway demonstrating individualised patient care including at planned, urgent and emergency contacts providing care in hospital at home or at the scene of an emergency

- Contribute and maintain an environment in which effective learning and improvement can take place including providing teaching and education to colleagues in order to advance the care of patients in all settings.
- Contribute to ensuring the nursing and midwifery service is recognised as part of the overall Falkland Islands Health Service working within the clinical governance structure, maintaining a portfolio of continuing professional development to evidence being a reflective practitioner; meet own developmental needs identified in order to practice safely and effectively with the Falkland Islands setting; contribute to the wider health service to promote a quality service
- Work in other aspects of the health service as appropriate including in times of staff escalation.

Essential criteria
- Interest in working in the Falkland Islands
- Current registration as a registered midwife and a registered nurse with the United Kingdom’s Nursing and Midwifery Council (or the equivalent body in a country with a comparable healthcare system such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the European Union).
- A minimum of five years of post-registration experience as a midwife in the United Kingdom (or a country with a comparable healthcare system such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the European Union).
- A minimum of two years of post-registration experience as a nurse in the United Kingdom (or a country with a comparable healthcare system such as Australia, Canada, New Zealand, or the European Union).
- Evidence of continuing professional development in nursing and midwifery.
- A full driving license for manual transmission vehicles.
- Uses the English language in spoken and written form as a first language or to an equivalent standard.
- Able to work unsocial hours, extended shifts, and participate frequently on an on-call rota.
- Able to work independently while engaging support from other members of the healthcare team when required.
- Able and willing to fly to provide care in emergency situations including on light aircraft or to overseas destinations such as Chile or Uruguay.
- Able to use information technology including Microsoft software and an electronic patient record system.
