Job purpose
To provide optimum quality of effective and efficient Orthopaedic and Trauma care within the contract resources available to the Western HSC Trust predominantly in Altnagelvin Area Hospital. To undertake the provision of a trauma and elective service to Londonderry, Enniskillen, Omagh, Limavady and Coleraine. The trust provides outpatient clinics at the South West Acute Hospital, OHPCC, Waterside Health Centre, Roe Valley and the Causeway Hospital. In order to supply a comprehensive and regular outreach service to the extended catchment areas this work will be shared with the incumbent team of 14 consultants. It is necessary therefore to undertake outpatient clinics at the Erne Hospital, Tyrone County Hospital, Roe Valley, Waterside Health Centre and the Causeway Hospital.
Job role
The successful applicant will help to provide a high-quality upper limb orthopaedic service for a rural population of 320,000 plus at present and join the trauma team rota. With the potential inclusion of Coleraine orthopaedic services this population will increase to approx 400 – 420,000.
The trauma workload increases seasonally peaking in the summer with the inclusion of the Lakeland, North Coast and Donegal holiday makers.
Area for complimentary sub-specialist experience and where unmet need has been identified would be Hip and Knee arthroplasty surgery including revision surgery.
The successful candidate will be expected to provide surgical management of non-specialist paediatric fractures.
Key Result Areas / Main Responsibilities:
The prime clinical responsibility is to be accountable for the continuous care of his/her patients and, as part of this responsibility, undertake shared rota arrangements for the Orthopaedic and Trauma Rota ensuring appropriate standards of care for patients and standards of education, support and supervision for junior staff at all times.
The successful applicant will promote and develop multidisciplinary teamwork within the specialty and will communicate effectively with all agencies and personnel involved in providing Orthopaedic and Trauma services.
The successful applicant will work together with his/her Orthopaedic and Trauma colleagues in the further development of Orthopaedic and Trauma services in the area.
The successful applicant will be responsible for providing procedures relating to the specialty and will develop same in keeping with medical advances.
