Hours: Permanent, Full-time (37.5 hpw)

 

Job summary

The post holder will:

  • Provide advanced clinical expertise in the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of adults with Head and Neck Cancer.
  • Have responsibility for clinical and service developments including setting up VFS, FEES and SVR/laryngectomy valve services. This will include devising and reviewing care pathways, protocols and governance arrangements as appropriate for the SLT Head and Neck Cancer service across the Trust in collaboration with Team Lead and Head of Service.
  • Be a consultative and final point of reference to the staff team, and provide guidance to the relevant Team Leads and Speech and Language Therapy Head of Service with regard to service developments and evidence based practice for patients with Head and Neck Cancer.
  • Deliver a Speech and Language Therapy service to a specialist complex Head and Neck Cancer caseload. There will also be a requirement to provide clinical sessions, second opinions and clinical support to less experienced SLTs working with complex Head and Neck cancer caseload Trust-wide.
  • Have access to support from the relevant Team Lead and the Speech and Language Therapy Head of Service.

 

Main responsibilities

  • Be responsible for the provision of a high quality Speech and Language Therapy service to a designated caseload.
  • Provide expert professional opinion within the specialist area on behalf of the Trust.
  • Propose policy changes, impact beyond own area, policy development for own specialist area.
  • Contribute to the development of organisational and professional body responses to emerging health policy at regional level.
  • Interpret national and regional policy for specialist area.
  • Build and maintain relationships and collaborate with others in developing projects relating to specialist area.
  • Lead in implementing change programmes in the specialist area.
  • Provide support to more junior colleagues and others who are affected by change.
  • Interpret and compare a complex range of options for treatment within specialism; identify and contribute priorities for the specialism.
  • Extrapolate knowledge to understand potential future impact of key decisions for specialist clinical area.
  • Review the effectiveness of alternative treatment options and therapeutic approaches for a highly specialist area/supervisees caseload.
  • Balance clinical priorities for the specialist caseload or specialist clinical service area with those of the assigned area and wider SLT Team.
  • Develop systems which help self and others manage their time and workload more effectively.
  • Highlight priorities and collaborate with the Team Lead to compile clinical evidence to inform business plans for specialist area.
  • Be flexible to demands of the specialist clinical service and the needs of the whole adult SLT service and demonstrate ability to provide clinical cover in the trust as directed by Clinical Lead/Head of Service.
  • Deputise for Team Lead.
  • Advise Team Lead on workforce planning for specialist service.
  • Review current service delivery for specialism, identifies opportunities for minimizing inefficiency and implements change.
  • Contribute to HR process for specialist area e.g. recruitment and selection, appraisal, mentoring and coaching as required.
  • Maintain up to date records of all annual leave, sick leave and study leave, reporting absence in line with Trust and Departmental policy.
  • The post holder will promote and support effective team working, fostering a culture of openness and transparency. The post holder will ensure that they take all concerns raised with them seriously and act in accordance with ‘Your right to raise a concern (Whistleblowing)’ policy and their professional code of conduct, where applicable,
