Job summary
To act as a member of the Trust wide Multi-Disciplinary Assessment, Diagnostic and Intervention Team for Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in organising, delivering and ensuring an equitable and clinically competent service to children referred to the service.
The post holder is responsible for assessment of and contribution to ASD diagnosis in accordance with professional standards as well as maintaining a high level of knowledge in Sensory Integration based and related techniques in ASD.
The post holder will also have a key role in provision of relevant Occupational Therapy assessment and intervention for children known to the service. The post holder will act as a Lead Advisor in this area of specialism for Paediatric Occupational Therapy staff within the Trust. This will involve organising training and awareness sessions and case supervision.
Main responsibilities
- To be an Occupational Therapy Clinical Lead for designated areas within the Specialist ASD team, liaising with and advising clients and professional colleagues regarding Occupational Therapy.
- To provide clinical leadership ensuring that the highest standard of assessment and treatment is provided for children referred to the ASD Service.
- To identify and advise on Sensory Processing /Sensory Modulation based difficulties in ASD which produce specific behaviours.
- To carry out Paediatric OT assessments in areas of sensory, motor and cognitive function using clinical observations and skilled analytical procedures in support of resultant diagnosis and in keeping with professional training Standards and Competencies.
- To plan, carry out and review OT intervention through a prioritised response using an advanced level of problem solving and reasoning ability, management of risk and skilled judgement in intervention.
- To provide training and support to parents’, carers’ and professional staff on specific intervention approaches needed with individual children, e.g., Sensory based or behavioural.
- To advise on management strategies in school and home and act in a consultative capacity for Educational professionals, health professionals and parents’/carers’.
- To specify children’s environmental needs in relation to home and school management.
- To ensure intervention is progressed to an agreed closure evaluating outcomes as needed and setting up reviews or onward referral as appropriate.
