Job summary
The role of the Health Care Assistant in both the Community Nursing Service and treatment Room Service is to work under the indirect supervision of the District Nursing Team Leader or Treatment Room Team Leader undertaking tasks and duties delegated to assist in the provision of a high quality, effective and efficient care for patients following Trust policies and procedures.
Main responsibilities
- To show respect for the dignity and comfort of the patient at all times.
- Undertake, record and follow guidelines for the tasks for which you have received appropriate training.
- Urinalysis and preparation of specimens for investigation by the pathology laboratory.
- Measuring and recording (Blood pressure, Pulse rate and rhythm, Temperature, Height and Weight – Body Mass Index, Venepuncture, ECG)
- Assist in raising awareness of health and well-being, and how it can be promoted.
- Give accurate and appropriate information to patients and groups within own competence.
- Use appropriate infection control procedures and maintain work areas in each clinical room so that they are clean, safe and free from hazards, reporting of any potential risks identified, including (Hand washing, Universal Hygiene Procedures, Collection and Handling of laboratory specimens, Segregation and disposal of waste materials, Decontamination of instruments and clinical equipment, Reporting and treatment of sharps injuries, Dealing with blood and body fluids spillages, Assist patients and colleagues in adopting sound infection control measures)
- To ensure stock items are ordered as directed by Treatment Room/District Nursing Sister in charge.
- To record drug fridge temperature as per policy and maintaining vaccine stock levels ensuring stock rotation.
- To give simple practical assistance or advice to help ensure the immediate well being of the patient.
- To organise the day’s work to ensure a minimum of travelling time.
- To assist the District Nursing/treatment Room sister with any Nursing or rehabilitative procedure which requires the help of a second person.
- To keep the District Nursing/Treatment Room Sister informed of the patients progress and reporting at once any accident or unusual incident.
- To contribute toward good communication and liaison with all staff/carers involved in the care of the patient.
- To keep a diary account of each patient visited and of miles travelled in the diary provided.
- To record appropriately in the patients care plan.
