The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse in the extended class (EC), who possesses the competencies to autonomously diagnose, order, and interpret diagnostic tests, prescribe pharmaceuticals, and perform procedures within their legislated scope of practice. The Nurse Practitioner exhibits advanced knowledge, skills, and judgment in providing patient care that aligns with the current College of Nurses of Ontario Practice Standards for Nurse Practitioners and the competencies defined by the Canadian Nurses Association for Nurse Practitioners.

As an NP, you will deliver specialized and advanced nursing care for patients within the Acute Care Surgery (ACS) Service. You will collaborate with the interprofessional team and the most responsible provider to assist patients and their families in transitioning across the healthcare continuum. You will be expected to conduct comprehensive nursing assessments and consultations for patients and families admitted to the ACS service who present with complex and challenging surgical needs. You will be working closely with the MRP surgeons, medical learners, nursing and allied health team. Furthermore, you will assume a leadership role and work closely with the broader healthcare team and community partners in managing complex patient care situations.

The Nurse Practitioner (NP) provides leadership and is responsible for advancing Acute Care Surgery (ACS) services throughout the healthcare continuum, as well as optimizing discharge processes. The NP integrates research into practice to maintain best practice standards and incorporate them into clinical initiatives. You will initiate and engage in professional and organizational activities to enhance nursing practice and facilitate improved patient care outcomes. Additionally, the NP position will support the hospital's Vision, Mission, and Strategic Direction.

On a practical level, you will

  • Utilizing a strong clinical knowledge base, cares for patients and families through the collection of health and diagnostic data, advanced physical assessment, formulation of diagnoses, and development of treatment plans in collaboration with the most responsible surgeon
  • Perform comprehensive nursing/medical history, physical and psychosocial assessment of the patient’s status, and development and implementation of a plan of care to address identified needs of patients across the Medical Program.
  • Provide direct, specialized care and/or consultation to patients, families, health care professionals, and community partners in situations where advanced nursing expertise is required (e.g., complex patient situations with unpredictable outcomes).
  • Work with the interdisciplinary team to set care goals and advance care planning.
    Initiate and execute diagnostic and therapeutic procedures for the identification and management of medical conditions, as authorized through medical directives when necessary.
  • Support the establishment and attainment of clinical objectives, ensuring alignment with the strategic direction of the Program and the organization.
  • Lead and influence clinical practice and patient outcomes by collaborating with the healthcare team and community partners to address complex patient care situations.
  • Plays a key role in quality improvement activities and policy/procedure development, relevant to Acute Care Surgical Care
  • Provide ongoing support for the professional development and educational needs of staff, fostering a culture of continuous learning and growth.
  • Integrates research into practice to ensure best practice standards are maintained.
  • Initiates and participates in professional and organizational activities to improve and advance nursing practice in the area of surgical care
  • Creates, utilizes, and/or disseminates new nursing knowledge

Qualifications

  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario as a Registered Nurse in the Extended Class (Primary Health Care or Adult) and entitled to practice.
  • Master’s degree in nursing required
  • Completion of an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner Program (or equivalent) required.
  • CNA certification in Medical-Surgical Nursing an asset
  • Certification in Hospital and Acute Care for Nurse Practitioners (or equivalent) an asset
  • Membership in relevant professional organizations (ie. NPAO, RNAO) an asset
    Experience
  • Minimum 3 years direct clinical nursing experience in an acute care surgical setting
  • Previous experiences as a Clinical Nurse Specialist or Nurse Practitioner working in acute care, preferred
  • Eligibility for cross appointment with Faculty of Nursing, University of Toronto or another academic institution
  • Comprehensive knowledge base and experience in general surgery preferred
    Skills Required

  • High level of initiative, and ability to work independently
  • Demonstrated knowledge of evaluation methodologies. Support and participate in ongoing program development and quality improvement initiatives
