Job summary

The northern sector of the Western Trust provides services to a population of approximately 220,000 and is responsible for the provision of a complete range of Health and Social Care services in hospital and in the community.

The successful candidate will be part of a team of 9 consultants,3 specialty doctors, and 14 trainees. The specialty doctors provide support for the consultant team, as well as supervision for the junior doctors. Duties will include a full range of obstetric and gynaecological services Altnagelvin Hospital, as well as out-patient clinics at Strabane and Dungiven Health Centres and Roe Valley Hospital. 

The speciality doctors share a rota with ST3+ doctors. The rota is a 1:8, full shift, residential, second on-call rota.

Main responsibilities

  • Share the responsibility for continuity of care under the supervision of Consultant Obstetrician.
  • Participate in the provision of Outpatient clinics
  • The candidate would have regular labour ward sessions and be expected to mentor junior trainees.
  • It’s anticipated that the successful candidate would have an opportunity to develop a pecialist interest and undertake independent clinics in areas of expertise deemed appropriate by the clinical lead.
  • Be involved in the organisation of the teaching rota aimed at MRCOG and participating in the running of local multidisciplinary team courses.
  • Provide assessment, investigative and diagnostic services to women referred to the unit.
  • Initiate and monitor treatments.
  • Arrange admission of women to inpatient unit or transfer to regional unit as required.
  • Provide central communication link with other health care colleagues in the hospital and primary care teams.
  • Provide medical support during transfer of patients as required.
  • Participate in a 1:8 second on call rota.
  • Participate in maintaining clinical and other required documentation to professional standards.
  • Participate in Quality improvement and service development.
  • Participate in clinical and professional audit as agreed.
  • Liaison with other clinical/investigative departments as required.
  • Be aware of responsibilities and required response in Major Emergency Incidents.
  • Adhere to all Department, Trust and Professional standards as required.
