Regional Overview

The Goldfields region of the WA Country Health Service covers the Goldfields-Esperance Region of Western Australia. The region is located in the south eastern corner of Western Australia and covers 770,488 sq km (including offshore islands). The WA Country Health Service Goldfields consists of two main health campuses located in Kalgoorlie & Esperance, and three smaller hospitals located in Laverton, Leonora and Norseman. The Goldfields is a culturally rich region with a number of Aboriginal communities spread out across the region, 16 distinct Aboriginal language groups and an Aboriginal population that represents 12.3 per cent of our total population, with 1 in 10 people, on average, identifying as Aboriginal – this in comparison to the state average of 3.6 per cent. The region supports a wide range of industry, including mining, agriculture, aquaculture and tourism. Mining is the predominant sector in the central and northern parts of the region, with a well-established agricultural sector in the south.

Directorate Overview

This team provides specialist mental health services to the Goldfields Region for all age groups. The service aims to deliver a comprehensive range of high quality community focused mental health services to residence of and visitors to the Goldfields Region. Locally based, multi-disciplinary teams are located in regional centres; regular visits are made within the region to meet community needs.

Our Directorate actively supports and encourages diversity and inclusion across all occupational groups through the development and implementation of initiatives aimed at accessing and improving employment and mentoring opportunities for all people.

Position Overview

Provides clinical Occupational Therapy service to the Goldfields Community Mental Health Service and Inpatient Unit to meet the needs of individuals with mental health disorders, the families and carers and other consumers of the service.

Key Duties/Responsibilities

1.CLINICAL

1.1.Provides a clinical Occupational Therapy service including individual client assessment, treatment and key working using couple, family and group interventions as appropriate.

1.2.Works with the clinical staff in planning developing and evaluation therapy programs.

1.3.Liaises and negotiates with team members and community based service agencies in regards to the provision of appropriate services.

1.4.Participates in team activities to plan and deliver services and promotes teamwork with the multi-disciplinary team.

1.5.Maintains client records and statistical data, including computerised database in line with service requirements.

1.6.Participates in ongoing evaluation of clinical practice within the team setting.

1.7.Develops and extends own clinical knowledge and skills.

2.COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT

2.1.Initiates and participates in community development activities as appropriate.

2.2.Contributes to service development through participation in staff meetings, planning days, workshops and other meetings as relevant.

3.PROFESSIONAL

3.1.Advises line manager and senior clinicians of professional issues.

3.2.Participates in regular supervision to maintain and develop professional standards.

3.3.Engages in own Performance Management with line manager.

3.4.Supervises Occupational Therapy students as required.

4.EDUCATION AND RESEARCH

4.1.Initiates and participates in approved research projects and education programs.

4.2.Participates in Quality Improvement Activities in line with service requirements.

5.Undertakes other duties as required.

Work Related Requirements

The following criteria are to be read together with the Brief Summary of Duties and considered in the context of the WACHS Values.

Essential

1.Tertiary qualification in Occupational Therapy and eligible for registration by the Occupational Therapy Board of Australia.

2.Demonstrated knowledge of appropriate assessments and interventions for clients with mental health disorders.

3.Demonstrated good verbal and written communication skills.

4.Demonstrated ability to plan and provide occupational therapy interventions and work in a team environment.

5.Demonstrated ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.

6.Commitment to the development of the profession and of professional skills.

7.Knowledge of the WA Mental Health Act 2014

8.Eligible for or in possession of a current C or C-A Class driver’s licence.

Desirable

1.Previous relevant experience in mental health service provision.

2.Experience in providing group interventions.

3.Experience working with culturally diverse client groups.
