Contract and Hours: Permanent, Full-time / 40hpw, 10PA's (A waiting list may be established for the next 12 months should another similar temporary or permanent post arise)

Job summary

  • To contribute to the daily management of both inpatients (work with team on a 24-bedded Respiratory ward), outpatients (support the consultant in a 4-hour clinic of 3 New and 8 Review patients or 7 New patients) and Respiratory Hub patients (6 patients per 4 hour clinic) in the Respiratory Department
  • To provide specialist inpatient/outpatient/Respiratory Hub services (e.g. pleural procedures, NIV and oxygen management) and appropriate links with other specialty teams
  • To contribute to the management of inpatients referred to the Respiratory team for advice and management (Mean of 4-5 patients daily).
  • To participate in existing Respiratory Medicine activities in the Western Trust, including the Western Trust Lung Cancer Multidisciplinary Meeting and the Respiratory medicine/radiology meeting
  • To develop Respiratory services in conjunction with colleagues, outpatient and community multidisciplinary Respiratory services
  • To share in the collective responsibility for the provision of acute medical services within the Acute Directorate, Division of Emergency Care & Medicine to provide specialist Respiratory medicine services.
  • To contribute to the development of excellence in clinical practice through research, audit and participation in clinical and social care governance
  • To contribute to the teaching of medical students and junior doctors
  • Ensure good communication with patients and relatives
  • Participate in the investigation of any complaints within the Directorate
  • Complete clinical incident report forms as per Trust Policy

The services

The Respiratory Medicine service at Altnagelvin is currently provided by 5.6 WTE physicians, 1.0 WTE Specialist Grade Doctor in respiratory medicine, 5.5 WTE Clinical Nurse Specialists (3.5 General; 2 Lung Cancer) and for 3.0 WTE MTO’s in Clinical Physiology. The team consists of 1-2 FY1s, 2-4 Fy2/CT trainees and a SpR in respiratory medicine. The respiratory team manage approximately 1100 inpatients a year in a 24 bedded ward and 1955 outpatients a year. There are facilities for the full range of Lung Function testing (including cardio-pulmonary exercise testing). There is a Community Respiratory Team and provision of pulmonary rehabilitation programme. Bronchoscopy services including EBUS is available.

An ambulatory Respiratory Hub operates to facilitate the rapid assessment, management and, where possible, early discharge of patients from the Emergency Department, Acute Medical Unit and non-respiratory wards. Together with the clinical review of patients, pleural procedures are also performed in the Hub.
