Oral Surgery

Job Summary:

The Trust is seeking to recruit an OMFS Consultant. This vacancy is a replacement post which will be based at Altnagelvin Hospital. The successful candidate will join a team of four Consultants who provide general OMFS, trauma, Orthognathic and skin cancer services to the population North and West of the region. The candidate will assist in the provision of an Orthognathic service to Western and Northern Health and Social Care Trust patients and support the development of a region-wide TMJ replacement service.

The successful applicant would have the option to provide an Orthognathic service to the region if they wished.

On Call Commitment

The appointee will be on-call for emergencies and continuing care of the Department’s patients. The on call commitment is 1:4 with prospective cover.

The Services  

The department provides the full range of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery/Oral Medicine services and procedures, using local and general anaesthesia for out-patients, day-cases and inpatients.

Department

Modern outpatient facilities are provided in all the peripheral Hospitals covered by the service. Cone Beam CT imaging is available on Altnagelvin and SWAH sites.

Inpatient surgery is provided in Altnagelvin Hospital. Patients are managed on a Pan Surgical Ward model. No bed is specifically allocated to any one surgery or any particular specialty. Children are admitted to a paediatric bed (Ward 6).

Operating takes place in the main theatre block. There is access to the Intensive Care Unit and the High Dependency Unit.

 

Emergencies are admitted to the surgical ward.

 

Key Result Areas/ Main responsibilities

The prime clinical responsibility is to be accountable for the continuous care of his/her patients and, as part of this responsibility, undertake shared rota arrangements for the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Rota ensuring appropriate standards of care for patients and standards of education for junior staff at all times.

The post-holder is expected to contribute equally with his/her colleagues in the diagnosis and treatment of patients requiring dentoalveolar surgery, oral medicine and the surgical management of Trauma cases.

The post-holder will promote and develop multidisciplinary teamwork within the specialty and will communicate effectively with all agencies and personnel involved in providing Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery services.

They will work together with his/her Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery colleagues in the further development of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery services in the area.

They will be responsible for providing procedures relating to the specialty and will develop same in keeping with medical advances.

 

Currently, provision of this service involves treatment of patients within a local catchment area of the Republic of Ireland. This is presently under review.
