Job summary

  • The post will be that of a full-time Consultant in Psychiatry of Old Age. The job Plan will consist of 10 programmed activities (PAs) per week with 1.5 SPAs for supporting professional activities to include continuing professional development (CPD), personal development and audit or quality improvement. Time for patient related administrative duties will be allocated during direct clinical care PAs.
  • The post-holder will work closely with the older people’s community mental health team to provide specialist assessment, diagnosis and treatment to patients with dementia and older people with mental health problems in out-patient clinics within the locality of Cityside in L’Derry and Strabane and review patients who are unable to attend clinics wherever they reside within this locality.
  • The post-holder will work with colleagues to provide the Memory Assessment Service, within the Londonderry, Limavady and Strabane catchment area, providing diagnosis, assessment and management in conjunction with other professionals.
  • The post is full-time, however, applications are welcomed from practitioners who wish to work part-time or on a job-share basis.
  • To liaise with others (medical/paramedical) to ensure a high standard of service provision within Older People’s Services in line with the Trust’s key objectives.
  • Duties as Responsible Medical Officer pertaining to the Mental Health (NI) Order 1986.

Main responsibilities

  • Ensure a high standard of care through outpatient, memory diagnostic and community-based work and also attend to the administration and organisation of their service
  • Encourage and maintain multi-disciplinary work within their workplace through effective leadership
  • Liaise with medical practitioners and other members of the multi-disciplinary team in order to ensure a high standard in provision of services
  • Liaise with medical staff within and across localities in matters concerning planning, teaching and further education
  • Engage in audit and resource management. They will collect and maintain adequate service statistics in order to further develop the services. Clinical research opportunities will be encouraged
  • Assist with the provision of teaching and clinical supervision for medical students, medical post-graduate students and others receiving training in the care of older people with dementia & functional mental illness as well as to those providing care to younger people with dementia. They may be expected to provide supervision for one or more postgraduate trainees in addition to providing clinical supervision for members of the multi-disciplinary team, including SAS Doctors
  • Keep their knowledge and skills up to date through continuing professional development (the Trust will support and fund this where appropriate- the Trust will facilitate study leave up to a maximum of 30 days in any period of 3 years including pay and expenses in the UK); maintain GMC standards of medical practice and partake in annual appraisal and 5-yearly revalidation, as required, to maintain GMC registration and licence
  • Maintain their own continuing professional development in line with the Trust’s policy on Clinical Governance
  • Perform duties as a Responsible Medical Officer pertaining to the Mental Health (Northern Ireland) Order 1986, subject to Part II approval by The Regulation and Quality Improvement Authority (or equivalent body)
