Job summary

The post holder will initially be based at Research and Development at C-TRIC, AAH. They will perform a wide range of diagnostic investigations in respiratory function and sleep service, both autonomously and as part of a team. The post holder will provide education and training to relevant personnel, Research Nurses, Study Support Officers, other health care professionals and medical staff. The post holder will support the Research Manager in providing a patient centred, high quality, safe and efficient Research Respiratory Service within Research and Development which adheres to the values of the Western Health and Social Care Trust (WHSCT).

Main responsibilities

  • Ensure the day to day management and administration of Respiratory Investigation & sleep services within Research and Development at C-TRIC, AAH (1) day per week and carried out efficiently and effectively, at initially out-patient level.
  • The post holder will be responsible for ensuring the technical accuracy and quality on a wide range of respiratory investigation tests, to include sleep studies, and produce accurate reports and take appropriate action (as required).

Investigations to include:

*Spirometry, peak flow rates, flow/volume loops

* Single Breath CO Transfer factor

* Static Lung Volumes

* Reversibility of airways obstruction with bronchodilators and nebulisers

* Pulmonary Function tests ( PFT)

* Overnight Pulse oximetry ( POX)

* Multichannel studies (limited Poly.’s)

* Respiratory muscle pressure measurements

* Nitrous oxide testing (FENO)

* Lead the CPAP (Continuous positive airway pressure) service to include patient set up and review clinics

* Blood gas analysis.

*Cardio-pulmonary exercise stress tests (CPET)

* Bronchial Challenge Testing.

*Field Exercise Testing

  • Maintain professional accreditation.Responsible for assisting to attract and support increased clinical trials to the Research and Development Department.
  • Assisting with set up and delivery of clinical trials proposed to run within R&D.
  • Maintain and co-ordinate their own portfolio of trials as required.
  • Perform clinical trial co-ordinator duties (to include study set-up organisation and contribution to SIV’s project team meetings, delivery of study visits) across a wide range of clinical trial areas.
  • Identify and pre-screen potential trial participants where appropriate.
  • Prioritise requests and organise workload to maximise the efficient delivery of the respiratory investigation and sleep diagnostic research services. To include overseeing the appointment systems; vetting and prioritizing appointments and reviewing appointment schedules to ensure diagnostic access targets are met.
  • Ensure staff are all working to the local, regional and national guidelines including the ARTP (Association for Respiratory Technology & Physiology), British Thoracic Society etc.
  • To establish departmental procedural and equipment protocols to meet best practice in keeping with regional and national Guidelines.
  • Participate in peer review both within the Western trust; and externally with other trusts.
  • Develop and maintain good working relationships with the staff, the different disciplines e.g. PI’s, Consultants, Research Nurses, Study Support Officers.
  • Delegate appropriately skilled staff to work areas as service demands.
  • Lead by example in setting a high standard of personal work whilst acting as a member of a team to ensure the highest possible standards of work.
  • Advise the Research Manager on goods and service requirements of the Department, evaluating new products and making recommendations as to suitable products.
