Job summary
The post holder will:
- Work as an independent practitioner within the Northern Ireland Clinical Education Pharmacists Network led by the Regional Trust Lead Clinical Education Pharmacist in collaboration with the Schools of Pharmacy Queen’s University Belfast (QUB), Ulster University (UU) and the Pharmacy Deanery.
- Provide standardised, quality-assured, experiential learning on an equitable basis to all undergraduate pharmacy students in years 1-4 and year 5 Foundation Training Year (FTY), as defined by the annual Regional Clinical Education Pharmacist work plan.
- Be responsible for the delivery of the Pharmacy Experiential Learning programme within their Trust.
- Work as a Clinical Pharmacist within their Trust.
- Support and train other Educational Supervisors in the provision of experiential learning.
- Undertake other educational roles as specified by the Trust.
- The post-holder will divide their time equally between their Trust and University-based activities.
The post-holder will be based in Altnagelvin. He/she will be required to work on another site in the Western Trust (Altnagelvin, South West Acute or Omagh Hospital & Primary Care Complex) if needed to cover student placements.
He/she will also be required to work at Queens University Belfast and Ulster University
(Coleraine Campus) to deliver training.
Main responsibilities
- Lead on the development, delivery and evaluation of (hospital) experiential learning to undergraduate pharmacy students’ years 1 to 4 under the direction of the Regional Trust Lead Clinical Education Pharmacist and in collaboration with UU and QUB.
- Responsible for the design of experiential learning for years 1-4 of the MPharm at both QUB and UU, in line with GPhC standards, learning outcomes and innovations in hospital pharmacy practice, under the direction of the Regional Trust Lead Clinical Education Pharmacist and in collaboration with UU and QUB.
- Contribute to the teaching and assessment of clinical pharmacy skills that support professional practice, such as consultation skills, examination skills, medicines reconciliation, clinical reasoning, decision-making, prescribing, teaching and managerial skills for years 1-4 of the MPharm at both QUB and UU.
- Provide support for pre-placement Experiential Learning orientation for students in the University setting.
- Develop Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) for undergraduates in collaboration with QUB and UU.
- Assess students’ Entrustable Professional Activities (EPAs) and Work Based Assessments (WBAs) for inclusion in the NICPLD e-portfolio.
- Evaluate the performance of undergraduates during hospital placements against agreed outcomes of the experiential learning programme and inform the Universities of their progress.
- Support undergraduate students in their learning.
- Contribute to the design and standard setting of Objective Structured Clinical Examinations (OSCEs) and other competency based assessments for years 1-4 of the MPharm for both UU and QUB, aligning with GPhC Standards and learning outcomes.
- Develop, implement and ensure effective experiential learning across a variety of clinical specialties and multi-professional teams can be provided to the required standard, in collaboration with QUB and UU. Work with Education Supervisors and the Pharmacy Deanery to plan hospital experiential placements.
- Co-ordinate and support Educational Supervisors and students during placement in the Trust.
- Liaise with the Regional Trust Lead Clinical Education Pharmacist and the MPharm module co-ordinators at QUB and UU to ensure appropriate training is provided in a timely manner.
- Work effectively as part of the Regional Clinical Education Pharmacist Team, role modelling the HSC values, making an equal contribution to the regional annual Clinical Education Pharmacist work plan and demonstrating commitment by timely completion of assigned work allocations to a high standard.
- Participate in the quality assurance of the undergraduate pharmacy student teaching provision by Educational Supervisors and provide information on undergraduate experiential learning activity and performance indicators to the Regional Trust Lead Clinical Education Pharmacist.
- Act as a role model and mentor and promote the role of the hospital pharmacist to pharmacy undergraduate students and Foundation Training Year Students.
- Co-ordinate and act as supervisor for practice- based audit where necessary, especially those carried out by undergraduate and Foundation Training Year Students.
